Published Wed 15 Dec 2021

Congratulations to the winner and runners up of the Vintage Hockey Moment Competition!

The winner takes home two dozen 🍷 vintage wines 🥂 from

Bird On A Wire Wines, and the runners up receive a 🍷 6 pack of wine 🥂 to toast to 100 years of Hockey in Queensland! 🎄

Thank you to all of our entrants, and to Bird on a Wire Wines for this incredible prize.

🥇 WINNER - Jason:

The first ever Queensland team in 1922 had gone to Sydney and been thrashed 11-0. The NSW goalkeeper had even left his net open in an unsuccessful sporting attempt to allow Queensland to score. The following year in Brisbane however the 1923 Queensland team below beat New South Wales 5-4. Two members of the Queensland group of note are Hec Cormie (kneeling, first on left) and Stan Willmott, founder of Queensland Hockey (centre, front, with two hands on stick). The team also featured Valley players Alec Brennan, Cec Best, Norm Ferguson and Jim Webb.

🥈 RUNNER UP - Jodi:

I love this pic of my mum Nola Slade (nee Welch) being held up by her teammates after they won the 1961 Australian Women's Hockey Championships in Brisbane. It was the first time EVER that QLD won this event.

🥈 RUNNER UP - Gail:

When you line up in height order just like you did at school - Vintage! Over 50s. Winners, Hobart 2009. Most still playing 12 years later!
