We are saddened to advise that Hockey Queensland Life Member Shirley Otto has passed away peacefully on the 5th February 2025. Details for her service will be available towards the end of February.
Shirley became a Life Member of Hockey Queensland (Queensland Women’s Hockey Association) in 1971 following many years of playing and representing Australia and Queensland and also serving a variety of roles within Queensland and Brisbane Women’s Hockey. She was inducted into the HQ Hall of Fame in 2003. Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association awarded her a Life Membership in 1970. She was also awarded the Australian Sports Medal.
She was the 157th person to represent Australian Women’s Hockey and played for Australia from 1954 to 1956 inclusive and was believed to be the youngest player (goalkeeper) to represent Australia. She was very proud of her games in the 1956 IFWHA Tournament.
Representing Queensland Women’s Hockey in 1949, and 1951 to 1957 inclusive, she was the 119th Player to do so. She was also an Umpire and Selector for many years.
She was an extremely proud member of St Andrews Ladies Hockey Club and along with other roles, was Club Captain for many years. Her input to the Club saw her induction into the St Andrews Saints of the Century that was created to celebrate the Club’s 100 years in 2023.
Our thoughts are with Shirley's family at this time.
