It is with great sadness that Hockey Queensland advises of the passing of Hockey QLD Life Member John Cushing.
John was a director of the Queensland Hockey Association (QHA), and then Hockey Queensland after the amalgamation in 1995. He was awarded a QHA Award of Merit in 1985, life Membership of Hockey Queensland in 1995, and was a recipient of the Order of Australia Medal (OAM).
As a Hockey Queensland Board Member he was Director of Competitions from 1999-2002 which included Selection Panel appointments for Managers from 2000-2002. He also served on the Planning Committee from 1997-2000.
The ‘Directors’ on the HQ Board had portfolios and were appointed to the various Committees of the day.
John was a passionate supporter of his beloved Ipswich Hockey Association and oversaw great changes and improvements to enable a better outcome for its members.

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of a true legend within our hockey community, John Cushing OAM. A man whose unwavering dedication, remarkable achievements, and extraordinary service have left an indelible mark on Ipswich Hockey and the broader hockey fraternity in Queensland.
John Cushing's contributions to our sport are immeasurable.. His association with Ipswich Hockey spanned an incredible 53 years, during which he selflessly dedicated his time and energy to nurturing our community. His passion and dedication were pivotal in shaping Ipswich Hockey Association into the vibrant entity it is today.
In 1972, John was bestowed with the honour of Life Membership to Ipswich Hockey Association. Through the years, he undertook various leadership roles, most notably serving as President for an impressive 35 years and as Secretary for 18 years. John is also a life member of Ipswich Hockey Umpires Association and Eastern Suburbs Hockey Club. These roles not only underscore his devotion to our community but highlight the profound impact on the broader hockey landscape.
As we collectively grieve the loss of John Cushing, let us also celebrate his remarkable life and the lasting legacy he leaves behind. It's worth noting that his influence lives on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who are active members of our hockey community. Ipswich Hockey owes its thriving state to his tireless efforts and unwavering commitment.
