HQ Academy Visits New Zealand and Canberra to round out 2024

Published Tue 14 Jan 2025

The Hockey Queensland Academy rounded out 2024 with two final events in Canberra, ACT and Hamilton, New Zealand.

At the end of October, two HQ Academy teams travelled to Canberra for a mini-series with Hockey ACT and Hockey Victoria teams. It was a short experience which brought plenty of learnings and experience for our players and off-field team - Clarke Tunstall, Allan Afonso and Kelly Free.

The final event was a Quad Series in Hamilton, NZ where a Boys and a Girls team competed against teams from across the country. Our teams were accommodated, fed and looked after at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Hamilton with the hockey action at their fingertips.

The competition was strong, and Hockey Queensland is thankful for the amazing environment and those that brought the experience together for our teams.

Our coaches - Rhylee Pendrigh, Tracey Jackson, Shannon Bobart and Alex Hough - were great leaders for our girls and boys teams.

The Women came away with Gold and the Men with Bronze. The Queensland Girls took out the final after a fantastic week and finished as inaugural champions beating Heritage 5-2. The Men finished with a flurry in the boys Bronze medal match to beat Heritage 6/3.

Next up in the 2025 calendar for the Academy is a visit from the Japanese Men’s U18 National team in the next few weeks.
