Hockey Queensland is thrilled to announce the latest award winner for service to hockey in Queensland. This recipient was announced and awarded at the recent Hockey Queensland Annual General Meeting in conjunction with The Hockey Queensland Championship (HQC) in Brisbane.
Diana Young
Distinguished Service Award
Association – Brisbane Women’s Hockey Association
Di has a very long history of involvement with hockey, from club to association to state, and not only in Qld but also at Australian level.
She has been a HQ Women's Masters selector for over 20 years from 2003 - today, and Chair of the Women's Masters Selectors panel for many of those years.
More recently (2021) Di has joined the HQ Women's Masters committee and applied her expertise to performance criteria and considerations.
Di's service to Women's Masters hockey was recognised with a HQWM Association Award in 2015 and a State Service Award in 2018.
She has also applied her selector expertise as a HQ U13 Selector, from 2006 - 2009 and again in 2012, and as an Australian Masters Selector from 2011.
Di has made significant contributions to BWHA over the past 25 years:
· BWHA Long Service Award (15 years) in 2016 Masters selector 1998-present and Chair of the Selection Panel for a number of those years.
· Not a simple achievement, bearing in mind that upwards of 130 players nominate for the six teams BWHA send to State Championships. And the performance of BWHA Masters teams at the State Championships is testament to the selections.
· Member of Junior Fixture & Grading committees (grass and turf) 2009-2013 – where upwards of 500 junior girls play hockey each year.
Di is also a past playing member of Kedron Wavell Hockey Club (formerly City United Hockey Club) where she was Club Captain in 1998, Girls VP 1999-2000 and recognised with a Life Membership in 2006.
Di continues to display her enthusiasm for the game of hockey and is a wonderful role model for others. We are very fortunate that she continues to volunteer and that she does it so well with humility and happiness.
