The program is currently being delivered in partnership with TAFE Queensland Brisbane at the State Hockey Centre, with the hope to expand the program to other regions in 2025.

TAFE Queensland, the state’s leading vocational education and training provider, has joined forces with Hockey Queensland in an exciting new partnership that aims to nurture aspiring hockey players while offering valuable educational and career opportunities. The collaboration has resulted in the creation of the "Brisbane Blaze TAFE at School Program," designed to provide senior high school students with a unique pathway to success both on and off the field.

The program offers players the chance to study a Certificate II and III in Sport Coaching, with a specialisation in hockey. This innovative curriculum will equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the world of hockey, while also preparing them for a wide range of career opportunities within the sports industry.

The Brisbane Blaze TAFE at School Program is open for year 10 and 11 students in 2024, with the opportunity to attend the program one day a week at our Queensland State Hockey Centre during the school year. This valuable hands-on experience will replace a regular school day and continue for a duration of two academic years. By immersing themselves in a dedicated hockey learning environment, participants will gain practical skills and knowledge that will set them apart in their future careers.

One of the most significant benefits of the program is its contribution to the students' overall education. Successful completion of the Brisbane Blaze TAFE at School Program will allow students to contribute up to 8 Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credits, ensuring a meaningful impact on their academic journey. Additionally, for those pursuing higher education post school, the program can contribute to their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Alison Lyons, the CEO of Hockey Queensland, stated, “Partnering with TAFE Qld to provide this incredible opportunity to Queensland’s future hockey coaches will create exciting new opportunities for our members. The value of connecting students with the vocational education in an area of their interest will only enhance their learning opportunity and provide Queensland with some sought-after, qualified coaches. We know there will be opportunities for these students to put their learning into action and we can’t wait for the program to begin.”

"We are thrilled to partner with Hockey Queensland to launch the Brisbane Blaze TAFE at School Program," said Jesse O’Hara from TAFE Queensland. "This initiative allows us to combine our expertise in vocational education and training with the passion for sports and physical activity fostered by Hockey Queensland. It's an exciting opportunity for young hockey players to pursue their dreams while gaining valuable skills that can open doors to various career pathways."

The Brisbane Blaze TAFE at School Program will be open for applications from 17 July 2023, with the program set to commence in term 1 of 2024. Prospective students are encouraged to seize this opportunity to be part of an exceptional program that combines quality education, hands-on training, and a clear pathway to success in the sports industry.

As Hockey Queensland and TAFE Queensland pave the way for the next generation of hockey enthusiasts, the Brisbane Blaze TAFE at School Program promises to be a game-changer, empowering students to pursue their sporting dreams while laying the foundation for a successful future beyond the field.
