Australian U21 Championships Wrap Up
Published Thu 30 Mar 2023
This year’s Hockey Australia U21 Championships will go down as one to remember after an enthralling week of competition at the Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre.
In the Grand Final of the Women’s competition, our Queensland team were beaten in the final minutes 4-3 by NSW State. It was 2-2 at half time, until NSW State scored in the 55th and 56th minutes, making it 4-2. In the end, a goal in the last minutes from Georgina West wasn’t enough to seal the victory.
In the Men’s bronze medal match, Victoria appeared to have it in the bag until Queensland came from two goals down, scoring twice in the last 10 minutes to send the match to a shootout. The Queensland Men carried the momentum into the shootout, winning 3-2 thanks to heroics from goalkeeper Jesse Folpp.
Women – 2nd
Men – 3rd
Both of our Queensland teams brought home the Player the Whistle awards in true #TeamQLD style.
Congratulations to our teams on a successful tournament, to our Queensland athletes who competed for other states, and to our officials.
