2024 A Year In Review

Another huge year for hockey in Queensland, with our community celebrating many milestones, achievements, and successes!

Come with us as we look back at the year that was, month by month, with just a few highlights from each one. 

Enjoy a small snippet of what our Queenslanders got up to during 2024.

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | January

- Australian Indoor Championships were held between 3-25th January for U13s all the way to Opens.

- Our U21s QLD Indoor teams got the double, both men and women winning the national title.

- The Brisbane Blaze TAFE at School Program launched

- 7 Queenslanders competed at the Hockey 5s World Cup in Oman, both teams finished 11th.

- Dayle Dolkens was selected to make her senior international debut for the Hockeyroos

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | February

- We named our U16 QLD Girls and Boys teams following the trials.

- Our very own Rosie Malone played her 100th cap for Australia

- We announced our new partnership with Metro Ford.

- We announced our new partnership with Playbook Coach.

- Our QLD U21 Men’s team was named

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | March

Our U21 QLD teams competed at the Australian Championships

Our women won the National title and our men won the bronze.

- Karissa Van der Wath was named Player of the Tournament at the U21 Australian Championships

- We had our new Poligras turf put in on Field 1. The Brisbane Hockey club Gala day was the turf time it was played on.

- In partnership with Hockey Australia, we released the Major Infrastructure Feasibility Study to coincide with the release of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic venue Master Plan.

THE YEAR THAT WAS | April

- Ben De Young retired from international umpiring 

- Our U16 QLD teams competed at the Australian Championships and both came away with Gold winning the national title

- Cody Hale & Aurora Kovacevich were awarded highest goal scorers at the U16 Australian Championships

- We held our QLD Women’s Masters State Championship in Maryborough

- The Perth International Festival of Hockey featured 17 Queensland athletes

- Aleisha Neumann & Tara Leonard umpired at the Perth International Festival of Hockey

- We held our Men and Women’s U18 State Championships in Rockhampton and the Gold Coast

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | May

- We held the Hockey Queensland Championship with 39 teams coming to Brisbane to compete. Townsville won the men and Brisbane won the women’s competition.

- Steve Stewart and Joanne Greensill were awarded Life Membership for their service to hockey in Queensland.

- We held the Men’s Masters in Townsville, with 430 players in the competition.

- We named our Queensland country teams and our U18 Queensland teams

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | June

-  Barbara Knowles received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to hockey

-  6 Queenslanders toured Europe with an Australian u23 team; including Mihaylia Howell, Dayle Dolkens, Kendra Fitzpatrick, Ruby Harris, Camryn Mathison, Karissa Van Der Wath.

-  Lynn Cowie-McAlister (Umpire Manager) and Tara Leonard (Umpire) travelled to in Terrassa, Spain to officiate at the FIH Women's Nations Cup

-  Amy Ryan visited Cairns, Mackay and Townsville to deliver to athletes that are part of the Hockey QLD Academy.

-  We held our U14 State Championships in Toowoomba and Ipswich

-  Scott Boyde was named in the New Zealand Olympic team for the Paris games

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | July

- We had 7 Queenslanders selected in the Paris Olympic teams

- Steve Rogers and Aleisha Neumann were selected to umpire at the Paris Olympics

- We hosted an international series between Malaysia U21s and a SIS/SAS U21 Australian team that featured Queenslanders Noah Fahy, Hayden Pease and Tom Campbell

- Linda Hunter received the Hockey Australia Award of Merit at the Australian Women’s Masters Championships

- The Australian Women’s Masters Championships were on in Sydney. Our 40s claimed Gold and won the National title.

- Our Queensland U18 Women’s team won the National title and our Men claimed Silver

- The Australian Men’s Masters Championships were on in Hobart. Our 34s claimed Gold and won the National title.

- We had 15 Queenslanders named in the Australian Futures Squads; 8 women and 7 men.

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | August

-  The Hockey Australia Country Championships were held in Goulburn; our Women claimed Silver and our Men bronze

- We hosted a four match International series between Australia and Malaysia Under 21 Men that featured 3 Queenslanders; Noah Fahy, Hayden Pease and Tom Campbell

-  We farewelled Renee Taylor’s International Career as she retired after 9 years and 132 games.

- We watched Corey, Beck, Tatum and Claire make their Olympic debuts in Paris

 

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | September

- Noah Fahy and Hayden Pease were selected to represent the Australian U21 team, The Burras at the Sultan of Johor Cup.

-  We celebrated the following being inducted into the Hockey Australia Hall of Fame; Mark Knowles, Madonna Blyth, Liam De Young, Julie Richardson and Matt Wells

- Our QLD U14s teams competed at the Australian Championships in Perth

- We held the U16 State Championships in Sunshine Coast and Gympie

 

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | October

-  We held the Hockey Queensland Annual Awards Dinner and celebrated the year that was on and off the pitch in Queensland

-  Daykin Stanger, Hayden Pease and Noah Fahy claimed silver at the Sultan of Johor Cup

- Our very own Tinesha Carey coached the Australian 40s team to Gold at the Masters World Cup in South Africa

 

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | November

-  6 Queenslanders were named in the 2024 QSport Awards

- We hosted 2 x Coaching Courses at the State Hockey Centre; Development Lead Coaching Course and Foundation Lead Coaching Course.

- Shane Kenny played his 100th game for Queensland

- Mark Knowles was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame

- Our Academy athletes travelled to Malaysia to play in a tournament against Malaysia, South Africa, Canada, Austria, Japan, and Korea. Our women finished second and our men finished 6th.

 

THE YEAR THAT WAS | December

✨ - Brisbane Blaze Women bring home Silver and Men bring home Bronze from the Liberty Hockey One League

- We farewelled Shane Kenny as he retired from Hockey One level after 101 games

✨ - Tim Howard and Corey Weyer selected in the 17-man 2025 Kookaburras Squad with Jayden Atkinson, Mitchell Nicholson, Hayden Pease, Joel Rintala and Daykin Stanger in the Wider Squad

✨ - Claire Colwill, Morgan Mathison (debut), Jade Smith (debut), and Tatum Stewart selected in the 2025 Hockeyroos Squad. 7 Queensland juniors were selected in the Development Squad: Hannah Cullum-Sanders (Tier 1), Casey Dolkens, Dayle Dolkens, Kendra Fitzpatrick, Ruby Harris, and Jesse Reid

✨ - Maddy Kenny, Karissa van der Wath, Camryn Mathison, Mihaylia Howell, Jamie-Lee Surha named in 2025 Australian U21 Jillaroos Squad

✨ - Noah Fahy, Daykin Stanger, and Matt Hawthorne named in 2025 Australian U21 Burras Squad

✨ - The final Indoor State Championships wraps up with the Masters Challenge in Maryborough

✨ - Jennie Thompson has announced her retirement from technical officiating

✨ - The first of the Hockey Australia Indoor Championships for 2025 begin with the Opens age group

✨ - Hockey Queensland Development Program through the Art of Mentoring launches

- Our Academy athletes travelled to New Zealand to compete in the Quad Series
