2023 #TeamQLD Awards hand-painted by artist Kevin Edmonstone

Published Mon 22 May 2023

Indigenous artist Kevin Edmonstone has created a beautiful collection of meticulously hand-painted hockey ball trophies, which will be given as State Championships #TeamQLD Awards across the Indoor and Outdoor competitions for 2023.

With a deep-rooted connection to his heritage and a background as a talented rugby league player, Kevin has followed in the footsteps of his ancestors and embraced the path of an Indigenous artist. His journey involved immersing himself in the rich tapestry of his cultural ancestry and learning the intricacies of Indigenous art.

Kevin's artistic endeavours are deeply intertwined with his homeland, Yarrabah, located just outside Cairns. Each piece he creates is a representation of the sea and land, paying homage to the Murray region.

Through his unwavering dedication, Kevin has not only honed his skills as an artist but also assumed the role of a teacher, imparting his knowledge to his community.

"What other people have taught me, I can go over and teach my own people," Kevin explains.

Hockey Queensland appreciates Kevin’s wonderful preparation of these trophies, which are kindly donated by Just Hockey Queensland along with extensive sponsorship support.

Cairns 2 Men and Gladstone Women have been the first teams to receive the trophies at the recent Chemist Warehouse U18 State Championships.
