Published Wed 31 Mar 2021

The 31st March 2021 marks 100 years of hockey officially being played in Queensland.

On the 31st March 1921, the Queensland Men's Hockey Association was formed, and by July 6 teams were available - City, Albion 1, and 2, Valley, Enoggera, & Toowong.

Hockey Queensland proudly acknowledges that the Valley Hockey Club is also celebrating its 100th anniversary, and is a foundation club of hockey played in our state.

Hockey Queensland are thrilled to unveil the original meeting minutes from 100 years ago.

Minutes of Meeting held at the YMCA Room 104 at 9:30pm on Thursday 31st March 1921.
Mr S Willmott explained that he had called this meeting to consider the advisability of commencing Hockey in this State.
Mr Irvine spoke very keenly on the matter and after general discussion, Mr Steven proposed and Mr Fisher seconded “that a Queensland Hockey Assn be formed and that we do the best possible for the first season”.

Hockey Queensland CEO, Alison Lyons, said: “Hockey in Queensland has achieved much success over its 100 years, due to the dedication and hard work of hockey enthusiasts.

The spirit shown by the 6 gentlemen 100 years ago and 98 years ago at the formation of the Queensland Women's Hockey Association, to organise for our great sport to be played, is reflective of the #TeamQLD attitudes and behaviours our members embody today.

It is our hope that the next 100 years of hockey will be even more successful”.
