2021 marks 100 years of hockey officially being played in Queensland.

On the 31st March 1921, the Queensland Men's Hockey Association was formed, and by July 6 teams were available - City, Albion 1, and 2, Valley, Enoggera, & Toowong.

Two years later in 1923, the Queensland Women's Hockey Association began with representatives from the competing teams; University (University of Queensland), State High (Brisbane State High School), St Andrews, and Federal Taxation involved in the association.

On 11 November 1995, the Queensland Women’s Hockey Association (QWHA) and the Queensland Men’s Hockey Association (QHA), amalgamated to form a new era in hockey – Hockey Queensland.

Today Hockey Queensland is comprised of Associations from Mount Isa to Atherton, Warwick to the Tweed Border, and everywhere in between.

The player base represents men, women, boys and girls ranging from five years of age in introductory programs to players aged over sixty five and seventy in Masters Programs. Hockey QLD is proud of the fact that hockey is considered a true family game.

Hockey Queensland has achieved much success over its 100 years of hockey, due in part to a large membership base, high quality coaches and team staff, and talented and dedicated members. Our players have risen to gain Australian honours over many years and continue to lead the way.

Commemorative Badge

Hockey Queensland is proud to reveal our commemorative badge for 100 years of Hockey in Queensland.

The badge has been specifically designed using the Queensland 'Q' with serifs that was used as the Queensland logo from the men's inaugural year in 1921 through to the 1980s for both the men's and women's teams.

The badge was officially launched at the Hockey QLD AGM on the 1st May 2021.

The Governor of Queensland pens support for 100 Years of Hockey

There is certainly long-standing vice-regal support for the sport of hockey in Queensland.

Queensland Governors have an extensive association with hockey in Queensland over the past 100 years and the current Patron of Hockey QLD is The Governor of Queensland, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC CVO.

All Governors since Leneen Forde have been Patron since Hockey Queensland was formed in 1995, and before that Queensland Women’s Hockey had the Governors as its Patron.  During the 1930s the then Governor, Sir Leslie Wilson – a keen sportsman, was Patron of the Queensland Men’s Hockey Association. He officially opened the Victoria Park fields and launched the hockey season there in April 1935.  Governor Matthew Nathan viewed some of the early women’s hockey games in 1923 shortly after the Queensland Women’s Hockey Association was formed that year.

His Excellency has written a message of support to celebrate 100 years of hockey in Queensland, for which Hockey Queensland is tremendously grateful.

100 Years Logo

The 100 Year logo symbolises the connection of the past with the present and future.

The Queensland 'Q' with serifs was used as the Queensland logo from the men's inaugural year in 1921 through to the 1980s for both the men's and women's teams.

Crossed sticks are another connection to our rich history and tradition.

Colours and fonts used bring the logo into the present, and celebrate the bright future hockey has in Queensland.
